Scoring Your Socially Distanced Flyathlon Summer
We have received several emails about the logistics of submitting data for calculation of points at the end of the Socially Distanced Flyathlon Challenge (SDFC). This page is intended to make that process crystal clear. In short, we will soon be posting and sending around a Google Form through which you will submit all of your data all at once.
Given that there is more than a month remaining in the SDFC (and given the high probability that we will extend the SDFC through the month of October), we encourage you to wait until you are completely satisfied with your SDFC performance before submitting your information for scoring, as the time it would take to accommodate last minute amendments for 150 people is daunting and thus will not happen.
We have revisited our initial documentation procedures since we launched in July and have decided to go largely with an “honor system” approach. Let’s be honest, it’s hard enough these to remember what day it is or to put on both pants and shoes every morning, so we’re no longer super psyched about looking at brewery and gear receipts. Similarly, we have decided that it is more important to minimize potential injury to fish than it is to see our race bib in the picture with said fish…
So here the criteria for what we expect to see in your submission for each points category. The Google Form will follow soon.

Run
Run / hike any distance on a single day and record your track in some way for submission for points. Additional points will be awarded based on elevation.
For the run, we will need to see some sort of documentation that you actually ran 50 miles with 7500 feet of vertical gain (unless you are Bryon Powell, and in that case we’ll take you at your word). Documentation can be a .gpx file, a photo of your fitness watch face, joining our Flyathlete club on Strava, etc…. Reminder that you only get to submit a single run for points!
Documentation: Submit proof of run with date, distance, and elevation gain.
Scoring: You will be awarded 3 points per mile run / walked / limped and an additional point for every 250 feet of elevation gain.

Fish
Catch a fish (on the same day as your run) and photograph it with a date stamp. You can catch as many fish as you want, but you only get to submit one for points.
I know we sent you a SDFC race bib, and you may use it if you choose, but in the spirit of it being a pandemic and all, we decided to trust your judgement and honesty in photographing your fish. The goals here are to create documentation that you caught a fish on the day of your run, to get a bad ass picture that allows for a reasonable estimate of its size, and most importantly to treat the fish with as much respect as possible (i.e. keep them wet).
There are several apps that you can get for your phone that will put a date stamp on your fish photo. My personal favorite is called Solocator which will embed your photo with the date, time, coordinates, elevation, etc…. There are plenty of others, so plan ahead and make sure you are ready when the time is right.
Finally, remember that you will only get to submit ONE fish picture via the Google Form for scoring from the entire summer, and that picture should correspond with the day of the run that you are submitting. Several of you have asked about whether it is the same calendar day or within a 24 hour period…. A technicality I hadn’t contemplated, but go for it!
Documentation: Submit a single photo of your fish with associated date that matches run.
Scoring: You will be awarded 3 points per estimated inch of a single fish caught on the same day (i.e. 24-hour period) as your submitted run.

Conservation
Raise money for coldwater conservation through Running Rivers' FlipCause platform.
This one is pretty straight forward. You set up a fundraiser when you registered for the event. If you didn’t set one up at the time, go here to do that. Raise money for coldwater conservation projects to earn points. If you need material to share with your potential donors to encourage them to contribute, visit our projects page. This is the category to rack up points and potentially become one of our top points getters, which will land you some sweet prizes.
Documentation: Submit what you think your fundraising total is, and we will match that with our records on FlipCause.
Scoring: You will be awarded 2 points per $10 raised.

Beer / Whiskey
Support your local brewery or distillery by buying their to-go products and document your support.
We have simplified this one, and we no longer want to see receipts, because that idea sucked. Instead, we want to see a photo of you enjoying your local boozery in an appropriately outdoor fashion. Examples include photos of post-run parking lot beers, backpacked fishing whiskey, underwater fish/beer photographs, etc…. Be creative, post on social media, and be sure to share your photos with the brewery / distillery.
Documentation: Submit a photo of your booze in action along with an estimate of how much you spent supporting local breweries / distilleries this summer.
Scoring: You will be awarded 1 points per $10 spent. A maximum of 25 points will be awarded in this category.

Community
Give back to your community in a meaningful way (e.g. river clean-up, trail work volunteer).
This one is straight-forward as well. In this strange time, I have noticed that many seem to be thinking only of themselves. But we are better than that. Honestly, we don’t care how you give back to your community or local wild place, just that you do, and get evidence of it (photo, video, etc…). If you happen to be wearing Flyathlon gear in your documentation, even better.
Documentation: Submit a photo / video of your volunteer effort.
Scoring: You will be awarded 25 points for being a decent human. A maximum of 25 points will be awarded in this category.

Sponsors
Support our incredible sponsors by purchasing their products.
Lke the booze, we have simplified this one, and we no longer want to see receipts, because that idea sucked. Instead, we want to see a photo of you showcasing your new gear in an appropriately outdoor fashion. Reel shots next to fish, parking lot Yeti Cooler shots, float fishing in your Alpacka raft, etc… Be creative, post on social media, and be sure to share your photos with the sponsor company. A list of companies will be provided soon.

TroutX
Send us your data so that we can share let your Flyathlon peers know where to go.
Have you ever noticed that the local fly shop has the “big board” that only lists fishing conditions on the big local rivers that they guide? The reality is that there are a ton of incredible fishing opportunities on the high mountain lakes and small tributary creeks that go unnoticed by most. In Colorado, I literally take my set of maps and systematically explore all of the fishy looking water I can find.
TroutX is a platform that is intended to share those wonderful wild places among our wonderful community of flyathletes. Currently in its final stages of development, TroutX will be a password protected website that allows you access to fishing intel from your fellow flyathletes, and encourages you to add to our knowledge base. We are currently limiting this tool to Colorado but hope to expand it in the future.
Documentation: Submit enough information for us to create a Colorado TroutX course (gpx track, thorough fishery description, lots of photos, and a good narrative) and earn bonus points. No pressure to submit your top-secret locations.
Scoring: You will be awarded 10 points. A maximum of 10 points will be awarded in this category.
