Course Name: Upper Williams Creek
Distance: 8 miles
Fishable Waterbody: Williams Creek
Course Description: The trailhead is located roughly 30 miles north of Pagosa Springs and across from the Palisades equestrian campground. Williams Creek Trail (587) begins at 8,374ft and immediately starts climbing and continues to climb for the first 2 miles. Lots of walking (at least for me) not only because of the uphill but also due to the loose rocks as this is a heavily used trail by equestrians. The first few miles of the trail have previously been described with the Spanish name Huerto (garden like). The trail begins to level off pass the Indian Creek Trail junction and then becomes a trail of small ups and downs. The trail crosses Williams Creek around the 3 mile mark and then again around 4 miles …which is where I caught a 10” cutthroat on my first cast on a micro chubby. I could not resist throwing the dry a few more times and caught 2 more fish in about 10 casts. Broke the rod down, enjoyed my Santa Fhazy, snacked on some wild raspberries and thimble berries and headed back to the trailhead. Obviously I am not the only thing that enjoys the wild berries as witnessed by the bear tracks and scat!
