Course Name: Lower Diamond Lake
Distance: 5.8 miles
Vertical Gain: 1200 feet
Fishable Waterbody: Lower Diamond Lake
Course Description: This run takes you through the Indian Peaks Wilderness, a popular area outside Rocky Mountain National Park that is often considered a more rugged version of the park. Diamond Lake is accessed from the Fourth of July Trailhead and has a 5.8-mile roundtrip hike. My ascent was slow due to deep snow drifts and boggy trail conditions (in addition to my lack of running prowess), but I assured myself I'd make up the time with a quick fish from the lake. When I arrived, however, it became immediately apparent that I would have to work for the fish, as they were not cruising the shelf. To get to the deep water where they were hanging out, I had to take off my shoes and barefoot-wade the icy water to reach a boulder near the edge of the shelf, where I was able to get a cast out to the middle. Three casts later and I had a beautiful brook trout. I hung around for a second fish as well, because I wanted to get my money's worth getting to the boulder! Once my feet thawed, I got my shoes back on and had a quick descent to the truck, where a Mama's Little Yella Pils was waiting for me to round out the FKF.
