Course Name: Jim Creek
Distance: 7.77 miles
Fishable Waterbody: Jim Creek
Course Description: Jim Creek is a real success story. Less than a decade ago, due to many years of cattle overgrazing, Jim Creek was an unnaturally wide and shallow muck hole of a creek. In fact, in the 3.5ish miles from the forest boundary to La Jara Reservoir, stream temperatures warmed so significantly that they were too warm for trout to survive year round. Enter Trout Unlimited and Running Rivers, who have spent the last 5+ years improving habitat through habitat reconstruction, bank stabilization, and cattle exclusion. While there is still room for improvement (and we will be there as long as it takes), Jim Creek is now a real gem of a remote creek to run and fish. This course goes from the mouse-infested outhouse to the marmot inhabited hunter's cabin (see GPX and provide pictures of you touching each (carefully...). As of 2022, you can catch the incredible Rio Grande cutthroat trout, as well as brook trout and the occasional tiger trout (ew, I just threw up in my mouth a little bit...).
